Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering plant which produces seeds. These whole seeds are then ground into a powder. Milk thistle seeds have an active ingredient of a flavonoid compound called silymarin. This is not concentrated, it is only ground milk thistle seeds.
Silymarin, has been widely researched and it may help improve liver function. The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics found that silymarin may effectively treat liver dysfunction. BMC Research has also found that the silymarin in milk thistle seeds has hepatoprotective (the ability of a substance to prevent liver damage) properties. And, research of milk thistle seeds has also been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.
1 teaspoon = 1200 mg of ground milk thistle seeds which is approximately 2% silymarin. 1200 mg = approximately 24 mg silymarin
